Following After the Folly of Fools
Disclaimer: “ 1. Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: 2. Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. 3. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. 4. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.”
Jeremiah 10: 1-4 KJV
Merry Deception
I have to admit of all the posts I have made thus far, all glory be to God; this one gave me the most introspection. Just to be honest. I grew up celebrating the holiday known as Christmas. It was festive and fun and just seemed like the purest and most exciting time ever!
When I think of something that displeases God, honestly, this wouldn’t be at the top of the list. It would be one of those things like telling someone they aren’t fat, even when they’re bursting at the seams. Simply who does it hurt? In fact, by Satan's deceptiveness, it seems to be the giver of happiness.
A Time of Cheer
This celebration originated from our enemy; we learned it in appreciation from getting the day off of picking cotton and cutting sugarcane on their slave plantations. While they no doubt got dressed in their finest attire to go and worship, in places, they segregated to God’s people. We still enjoy this God-forsaken holiday now by not clocking into their places of work.
A holiday they created in the name of our Messiah in which countless children are told that if they do not have gifts, they do not have a ‘good ’ Christmas. For clarity, what does it mean when you say, “we are sending gifts so that children have a ‘good’ Christmas?” Has Jesus been born or not?
Why does it matter if someone is alone on Christmas if Jesus is there? Is the season about friends, family, and loved ones or the birth of Yeshua?
What constitutes a ‘bad’ Christmas? Did the shepherds watching their flocks receive good news or not?
This man-made disgrace of a holiday has orchestrated sad scenarios for countless people to feel depressed, filled with anxiety, neglected, stressed, envious, disappointed, impoverished, unloved, forgotten, alone, and deserted, all at a highly heightened level, for no reason, all in the name of our Messiah. Our Messiah, whose birth into this fallen earth, is one of the most hope-inspiring events for our people of all time. Don’t see a problem with that?
Double-minded Praise
Well, let’s take a closer look past the colorful lights and the blow-up characters on our front lawns and the lit trees in the living room. Let’s see if God minds sharing a holiday with a fat mythical idol, apparently invading the house you praise Him for blessing you with, leaving gifts of deceit for your children.
Make no mistake, nor deceive yourself; there is no denying if you participate in this sham of a celebration drenched in pagan origins, you signify the condoning of God sharing His glory with foolishness. Isaiah 42:8. God will not share His glory with graven images, but you think He is ok with sharing it with flying reindeer?
Oh, I know you keep the 'Christ’ in Christmas, by popping up nativity scenes and performances. If you think I am being too harsh, please remember that God once drowned the earth save one man, Noah and his family, and some of His animals in response to the corruption of man and their refusal to repent.
That nativity scene is a breaking of the second commandment, Exodus 20:4. The plastic baby in the play representing Jesus is merely swaddled sin. Sin being transgression of the law, 1 John 3:4. There is just about as much ‘Christ’ in Christmas as there is devil in Devil’s food cake.
It’s Everywhere
Ok, so you avoid lying about Santa. But what about the songs? Take this lyric, for example, from one of the more popular Christmas tunes, titled “Here comes Santa Claus.” After children are told to say their prayers because Santa Claus is coming, they are then told that “ Santa Claus says we are all God’s children,”... hmmm.
Is this possibly where we get the false representation of God’s children being everyone? No, we are not 'All God’s children.' This is a lie. Not just because Santa said it, but because it is opposite to what God has said! I hope this matters, “ But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name,” John 1:12. That is not everyone. Santa is lying to your children.
The same lyric continues to say, “And HE will make everything right.” Yes, according to this Christmas song, Santa will make everything right. The songster actually mentions God! but then still goes on to say Santa is who will make everything right.
This song is literally telling your children to pray as they think of Santa Claus coming to make everything right. What would be the depiction of idol worship to you?
Is it Really That Bad?
“So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him,” 2 Corinthians 5:9. Like many of us, I just didn’t see the harm in supposedly celebrating the birth of Jesus in the form of Christmas participation.
I, too, once loved receiving unmerited gifts to my glory, honor, and delight in the name of my Messiah, whose innocent blood soaked the cross he was nailed to by His hands and feet as He was mocked, spat on, and struck on His thorn-crowned head, pierced for my transgressions and crushed for my iniquity, as He took His last breath after assuring one of our brethren, a criminal, cast away by society that he would spend eternity with Him. Isaiah 1:21-23. Oh, and the Christmas Food! Can’t forget the food!
Delicious baked Christmas swine. Leviticus 11 details what our God has told us we can and cannot eat, and glazed pineapple-laced ham is not on the menu. Pay incredibly close attention to vs. 45. (If the Holy Spirit leads, I will do a post on Peter not actually eating the unclean thing in the vision during his trance, but for now, Acts 10:17 explains).
How Seriously Does God Take His Holiness?
Well, let's dive into the Holy Scriptures, “ And when they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah put out his hand to take hold of the ark, for the oxen stumbled. 10. And the Anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he put out his hand to the ark, and he died there before God,” 1 Chronicles 13:9-10.
So how might God view you wearing the elf hat of the heathen's idol while reading aloud His Holy scriptures? Do you think He finds it amusing? The God who killed a man for trying to steady the ark he was prohibited from touching? Never assume what you find as minor is what God finds minor as well. Isaiah 55:7-9.
The question is not do we think it’s okay to participate in a holiday that is primarily for the glorification of ourselves because we have every neatly wrapped reason too. After all, no one has been murdered, but does GOD find it pleasing to Him? It is, after all, supposedly for Him, right?
How often do you have to remind your children and others that this pagan adjacent holiday is about celebrating the birth of Jesus? I wonder why they forget. Is it because it’s not? How often do you need to convince yourself during the Passover remembrance, which is actually found in the Holy Scriptures, that this is about honoring God? See the difference, my loves?
A Slippery Slope
We are seeing the origination of Christmas right now, depicted in real-time through the engrafting of 'trunk or treat.' Envying the world's celebration of evil and glorifying darkness and corruption while dressing up their children as characters and spoiling them with sugary treats.
No different than the inception of Christmas. The wanting to serve two masters. Wanting to take part in aspects of worldly traditions that appeal to our flesh, whose purpose is to honor and glorify wickedness while trying to be holy at the same time.
The only thing missing with trunk or treat is that the enemy didn’t make some crazy connection to Jesus….yet. Although still, you find a lot of these ‘Halloween by a different name' events at supposed places of worship. Not hard for a child to make a connection.
Taking the 'Christ ‘ Out of Christmas
Think brothers and sisters. If you are engaged in serving your fellow man and worshipping God during December, those are attributes of your walk with GOD! Why would you give the glory to this materialistic holiday? How is it different than your worship and service in any of the other months of the year? It’s service to God; it’s what we do as believers!
We are surely a rebellious people; I consider myself at the top of this list; I have surely felt the embrace of His grace more times than I will ever deserve (my testimony for another time). I can't imagine that our Israelite brothers and sisters in the bible recordings ever participated in other nations' customs, religion, or traditions that they also didn't find appealing, festive, or deceptively pleasing to participate in. People are people! We are no different today.
Israelite, let us display our love in action by obeying the Lord's commands and show the heathen nations what it looks like to worship OUR God in Spirit and in truth.
Without the need for a talking snowman or searching for colorful eggs, a bunny has laid in random places. Let's let our father know in our actions that the traditions and customs that he gave to us are precious, Holy, and more than enough, and we do not need to conform or follow the traditions of foolish men.
Why do we feel the desire to reward ourselves with treats to honor God! How does that make any sense? Is His birth and crucifixion for our sins not enough?!
I guess I am asking, does it bother you, to the point of righteous indignation, that the heathens have concocted a time of recognition that YOUR savior has to share with silly fictional characters? And in most cases, they get the most glory. I repeat YOUR eternal savior, not theirs.
This Goes Beyond the Mistletoe
If displeasing our heavenly father and grieving His ever-convicting Holy Spirit isn't ought enough to repent and return, keep in mind God’s reaction every time our people stray to the tempting darkness of the enemy's ways. God's anger and discipline ensue.
Could this explain some of the conditions we face, the hardships we endure, and the strife and contention we feel under the thumb of oppressors? Let us never forget it was God who gave us into the hands of the Midianites because of our evil ways, Judges 6: 1-2.
And God who sent word through His prophet to our people once we cried out to Him, “ and I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice”, Judges 6:10.
But then, our God, who never forsakes His people Israel no matter how hard our heads, Isaiah 14: 1-5, sent his angel to Gideon to save our people out of the hands of the Midianites.
I am starting to see a pattern here between our rebellion and disobedience as a nation and our eventual discipline and oppression. God says to choose Him and His commands; the enemy says, what’s the harm? Surely you won’t die. Well, you have to ask yourself, whose report will you believe? Love you. His Glory.
